When running in a race you should never look back. The reason behind this is when you look back you slow yourself down. There are other ways to tell if there is someone behind you turning your head is not the correct way to do this.
Use your peripheral vision, your peripheral vision is when you look at something out of the corner of your eye. When running if you look to the side you can see someone coming up on your shoulder when you see that you can go it doesn’t slow you down and you are not turned around. Another thing to look for out of the corner of your eye is to look for a shadow. If you see a shadow near you, you can guess that it is either yours or someone close to you shadow.
Hearing is another way to be able to tell if a runner is close, listen for another person breathing close to you, or the load thumping of someone running that isn’t you. Listen to the crowd they can help you see if there is anyone close by. For example some people on your team may be yelling “their coming”, “they are 100 meters behind”, or “your good, no one’s close to you”. Another way to tell is listening for names that are not yours and if you pass a person yelling a name a little after you go by that isn’t yours you can assume that there is someone close to you.
Feeling, if someone is close by the air is different there is more of a breeze and it just is different than if you were running at the front by yourself.
